HMRC Mileage Rate Calculator UK

Work out how much you or your employer can pay tax-free for business mileage in your own car, van, motorcycle or bicycle.

Uses HMRC’s current Approved Mileage Allowance Payment (AMAP) rates, including the rate change that took effect for the 2026/27 tax year — the first change since 2011.

Calculate your mileage allowance

Choose your vehicle type and enter your business miles for the tax year. The calculator applies HMRC’s current rates automatically.

Only business travel counts — not your normal commute to a permanent workplace.
Business miles where you carried a fellow employee as a passenger. Attracts an extra 5p/mile you can claim on top.
Total tax-free mileage allowance £0
First 10,000 miles £0
Miles above 10,000 £0

Uses HMRC's current Approved Mileage Allowance Payment (AMAP) rates for the 2026/27 tax year onwards: 55p/mile for cars and vans (first 10,000 business miles), 25p/mile after that, 24p/mile flat for motorcycles, 20p/mile flat for bicycles, plus 5p/mile per passenger. This is what you or your employer can pay tax-free — if you're paid less than this by your employer, you can claim Mileage Allowance Relief on the difference from HMRC. Always confirm your specific situation at gov.uk.

2026/27 rate change: the car and van mileage rate rose from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles — the first increase in 15 years. The rate after 10,000 miles stays at 25p/mile. Motorcycles (24p) and bicycles (20p) are unchanged.

What counts as business mileage?

Not every mile you drive for work purposes qualifies.

Travel between different workplaces during the working day
Visits to clients, sites or temporary workplaces
Journeys that aren’t your normal commute to a permanent workplace
Your regular commute to a permanent workplace does not count

What if my employer pays less than the HMRC rate?

You can usually still claim the difference back.

The AMAP rate is the tax-free maximum your employer can pay, not a legal minimum they must pay. If your employer reimburses you at a lower rate (or not at all), you can claim Mileage Allowance Relief (MAR) from HMRC on the shortfall, usually through a Self Assessment return or form P87. If your employer pays more than the AMAP rate, the excess is taxable.

HMRC mileage rate FAQs

What is the current HMRC mileage rate for cars?

55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year, then 25p per mile after that. This applies from the 2026/27 tax year onwards.

Does the 10,000 mile threshold reset every tax year?

Yes. It’s based on business miles within a single UK tax year (6 April to 5 April), not a rolling 12-month period or total miles driven.

Is mileage allowance the same as fuel cost?

No. The AMAP rate is designed to cover fuel plus wear and tear, insurance, servicing and depreciation from business use, not just fuel. If you only want to work out fuel cost, use the Fuel Cost Calculator instead.

Can I claim mileage allowance if I’m self-employed?

Yes. See the Self-Employed Mileage Allowance UK guide — self-employed people can use the same simplified mileage rates instead of claiming actual vehicle running costs, as long as they haven’t already claimed capital allowances on that vehicle.

What is the passenger payment rate?

You can claim an extra 5p per mile, tax-free, for each fellow employee you carry as a passenger on a business journey, on top of your own mileage rate.
