Cost to Drive to Glasgow UK

Driving to Glasgow can be good value if you only count fuel, especially with passengers. But the real cost depends on return mileage, parking, traffic, route choice and whether the train or coach would be easier.

Use this page to estimate your fuel cost, check the extra costs that can apply around Glasgow, and decide whether driving, train, coach or public transport makes more sense for your journey.

✅

The simple answer

The fuel cost of driving to Glasgow depends on your starting distance, fuel price and MPG. As a real example, Manchester to Glasgow is about 216 miles each way via the M6 and M74 — in a 45 MPG petrol car at £1.60 per litre that is roughly £35 in fuel one-way, or about £70 return.

That is not the full cost. For Glasgow city centre, also think about parking, traffic, return mileage, route delays, passenger splitting, plus the Low Emission Zone if your vehicle isn’t compliant, and whether a train, tram, coach or park-and-ride-style option would be cheaper or easier.

Extra costs of driving to Glasgow

These are the costs that often make the real trip more expensive than the fuel estimate.

City-centre parking
NCP Oswald Street (next to Glasgow Central) charges around £4 for the first hour rising to about £26 for a full day, with season tickets from £5.35 a day — Q-Park Waterloo Street is a similarly-priced central alternative.
Traffic and approach routes
The M8 through the city centre and the M74/M6 approach from the south can both slow significantly at peak times.
Return mileage
The M6/M74 return leg south can be slower during rush hour or bad weather over the Shap and Beattock summits — build in extra time.
Low Emission Zone (LEZ)
Glasgow’s LEZ has covered the city centre 24/7 for all drivers since full enforcement began on 1 June 2023. Compliant vehicles pay nothing, but a non-compliant vehicle faces a £60 penalty (halved to £30 if paid within 14 days), doubling for repeat breaches up to a £480 cap.

Glasgow trip checklist before you drive

Check these before deciding that driving is cheaper than the train or coach.

Where will you park?

NCP Oswald Street (next to Glasgow Central) charges around £4 for the first hour rising to about £26 for a full day, with season tickets from £5.35 a day — Q-Park Waterloo Street is a similarly-priced central alternative.

Is your vehicle LEZ-compliant?

Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone charges non-compliant vehicles a penalty, not a daily fee – check your vehicle before entering the city centre.

Driving to Glasgow vs train or coach

The cheapest option depends on passenger numbers, parking, journey flexibility and how close your destination is to a station or tram stop.

Train (Central)

~4h32 from London · from £34.50 advance

Avanti West Coast runs around 45 trains a day between Glasgow Central and London Euston, fastest journey 4h32 (typical journey closer to 5h30). Advance fares start from about £34.50.

Driving + parking

Fuel + ~£3/hr parking (LEZ-compliant)

Usually wins once you’re splitting fuel across several passengers or heading outside the centre. A non-compliant vehicle risks a £60 LEZ penalty on top of parking, since Glasgow enforces via camera rather than a daily charge you can simply pay.

Cost to drive to Glasgow by situation

Glasgow’s city centre grid has metered parking plus several multi-storeys — check LEZ compliance too, since the zone covers the centre 24/7.

Hampden Park and the OVO Hydro both draw big crowds for events — check what’s on before assuming you’ll find easy parking.

Flying from Glasgow Airport or Glasgow Prestwick

Both airports serve the Glasgow area. Here’s what actually changes the cost of getting there.

Glasgow Airport (M8, Junction 28)

Express drop-off is £7 for the first 15 minutes (£1/min after) — but the long-stay car park is free for up to an hour with a shuttle bus, which avoids the charge entirely. Official Long Stay runs from about £15/day for longer stays. The Glasgow Airport Express (bus 500) runs 24 hours, every 10 minutes, to Buchanan Bus Station in ~20 minutes, £8.50-£11 single — there’s no direct rail line to the terminal.

Glasgow Prestwick Airport

Prestwick’s own drop-off (Car Park 1) is £4.50 for a full 60 minutes — roughly 7.5p a minute, genuinely the best-value paid drop-off of any major UK airport, and a real point in its favour over Glasgow Airport itself. It also has its own ScotRail station right at the terminal, with around 46 direct trains a day to Glasgow Central from £6.45 one-way.

Purple Parking gives 12% off Prestwick parking automatically (affiliate link).

Driving usually wins once you’re splitting fuel and parking across 3+ passengers or carrying heavy luggage; both airports’ free/cheap drop-off options mean a quick pick-up rarely costs more than the bus or train fare.

Cost to drive to Glasgow UK FAQs

How much does it cost to drive to Glasgow?

It depends on your distance, fuel price and MPG. As a rough example, London to Glasgow is around 400 miles each way via the M6 and M74 — in a 45 MPG petrol car at £1.60 per litre that is about £65 in fuel one-way, or roughly £129 return.

Is fuel the main cost of driving to Glasgow?

Not always. Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone risks a real penalty for a non-compliant vehicle, and city-centre parking and traffic can add considerably more than the fuel estimate alone.

Does Glasgow have a Low Emission Zone charge?

Yes. Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone has covered the city centre 24/7 for all drivers since full enforcement began on 1 June 2023. It works as a penalty system rather than a daily charge: compliant vehicles pay nothing, but a non-compliant vehicle caught by camera faces a £60 penalty for a first breach (halved to £30 if paid within 14 days), doubling for repeat breaches up to a £480 cap.

Is it cheaper to drive or take the train to Glasgow?

Often, for one or two people, if you don’t need a car once you arrive. Avanti West Coast’s fastest non-stop service from London Euston takes around 4h30 — considerably faster than the roughly 6-7 hour drive, and it avoids the LEZ too. Driving still typically wins once you’re sharing the cost across three or more people, or need the car for onward journeys once in Scotland.
