RealCost Guide
Cost to Drive to Cardiff UK
Driving to Cardiff can be good value if you only count fuel, especially with passengers. But the real cost depends on return mileage, parking, traffic, route choice and whether the train or coach would be easier.
Use this page to estimate your fuel cost, check the extra costs that can apply around Cardiff, and decide whether driving, train, coach or public transport makes more sense for your journey.
The simple answer
The fuel cost of driving to Cardiff depends on your starting distance, fuel price and MPG. A 100-mile trip in a 45 MPG petrol car at £1.60 per litre costs about £16 in fuel each way, or about £32 return.
That is not the full cost. For Cardiff city centre, also think about parking, traffic, return mileage, route delays, passenger splitting and whether a train, tram, coach or park-and-ride-style option would be cheaper or easier.

Extra costs of driving to Cardiff
These are the costs that often make the real trip more expensive than the fuel estimate.
St David’s Shopping Centre car park runs £3-£5 an hour, capped at £20 for the day, with over 1,000 spaces. Nine NCP car parks are dotted across the centre, most pre-bookable for a discount.
Busy motorway and city-centre approaches can reduce MPG and add time.
Most trips need the cost of getting home included, not just the outward journey.
Tyres, brakes, servicing and depreciation still matter on longer journeys.
Some routes may involve toll roads, paid crossings or extra detours depending on where you start.
Cardiff has ruled out a Clean Air Zone charge in favour of a £32m package of non-charging measures, though a possible road user charge is still under consultation.
Cardiff trip checklist before you drive
Check these before deciding that driving is cheaper than the train or coach.
Where will you park?
Parking near the city centre, event venues or stations can change the whole cost comparison.
Are you travelling at peak time?
Rush-hour or event traffic can make driving slower and less efficient.
How many people are travelling?
Driving often looks better when several passengers split the same fuel and parking cost.
Worried about a Clean Air Zone charge?
Cardiff currently has no Clean Air Zone charge – the council chose non-charging measures instead – but it’s still exploring a possible road user charge, so it’s worth checking before you travel.
Driving to Cardiff vs train or coach
The cheapest option depends on passenger numbers, parking, journey flexibility and how close your destination is to a station or tram stop.
Train (Cardiff Central)
~2h14 from London · from £41
Around 55 trains a day from London (fastest ~2h14, from £41). Bristol is much closer – about 32-39 minutes, from £6.90, with 31 trains a day running 05:07 to 23:30.
Coach (Sophia Gardens)
Up to 7x daily to London
Cardiff Coach Station at Sophia Gardens is National Express’s Welsh hub, with route 507 running up to 7 times a day to London, plus connections to Heathrow, Luton and Victoria Coach Station.
Driving + parking
Fuel + from £3/hour (St David’s)
Usually wins once you’re splitting the cost across 3+ passengers or heading outside the centre. No Clean Air Zone charge currently applies, unlike Birmingham, though Cardiff Council is consulting on a possible road user charge.
