Extra costs of driving to Cardiff
These are the costs that often make the real trip more expensive than the fuel estimate.
St David’s Shopping Centre car park and nine NCP sites are dotted across the centre, with over 1,000 spaces between them — most are pre-bookable for a discount, though it’s worth checking current rates before you commit to driving in.
The M4’s Brynglas Tunnels near Newport are the best-known bottleneck on the approach from the east — the toll on the Severn Bridge crossing into Wales was abolished in 2018, so that’s no longer a cost to budget for.
The M4 return leg back east adds real time on top of the outward journey, especially around the Brynglas Tunnels bottleneck near Newport.
Cardiff has ruled out a Clean Air Zone charge in favour of a £32m package of non-charging measures, though a possible road user charge is still under consultation.

Train (Cardiff Central)

Around 55 trains a day from London (fastest ~2h14, from £41). Bristol is much closer – about 32-39 minutes, from £6.90, with 31 trains a day running 05:07 to 23:30.
Coach (Sophia Gardens)
Up to 7x daily to London
Cardiff Coach Station at Sophia Gardens is National Express’s Welsh hub, with route 507 running up to 7 times a day to London, plus connections to Heathrow, Luton and Victoria Coach Station.
Driving + parking
Fuel + from £3/hour (St David’s)
Usually wins once you’re splitting the cost across 3+ passengers or heading outside the centre. No Clean Air Zone charge currently applies, unlike Birmingham, though Cardiff Council is consulting on a possible road user charge.

Weekend visit
Six Nations weekends and Principality Stadium concerts can make city-centre parking scarce and expensive — check the events calendar first.
Family visit
Techniquest in Cardiff Bay and Cardiff Castle are the city’s best-known family attractions — neither has its own car park (Techniquest recommends the nearby Q-Park Cardiff Bay with a 15% pre-booking discount; the Castle points visitors to pay-and-display at Westgate Street or Greyfriars).
Rugby or event day
Cardiff hosts major rugby internationals and events at the Principality Stadium – check event-day parking and traffic before you commit to driving.

Flying from Cardiff Airport
Cardiff Airport is at Rhoose, about 12 miles southwest of the city centre.
The terminal drop-off charge rose on 1 July 2026 to £4.50 for the first 10 minutes (up from £3), rising a further £4.50 per extra 10 minutes — but Car Park 2 offers a genuinely free 20-minute drop-off a short walk from the terminal. Long Stay 2, the cheapest of three long-stay car parks, starts from around £84 for 8 days pre-booked. A single £7.20 through-ticket from Cardiff Central covers the train to Rhoose station plus the connecting 905 shuttle bus (timed to meet every train) — an unusually good rail link for a smaller UK airport.
