Cost to Drive to Southampton UK
Driving to Southampton can be good value if you only count fuel, especially with passengers. But the real cost depends on return mileage, parking and whether the train or coach would be easier.
Use this page to estimate your fuel cost, check the extra costs that can apply around Southampton, and decide whether driving, train, coach or public transport makes more sense for your journey.
The simple answer
The fuel cost of driving to Southampton depends on your starting distance, fuel price and MPG. As a real example, London to Southampton is about 78 miles each way via the M3 — in a 45 MPG petrol car at £1.60 per litre that is roughly £13 in fuel one-way, or about £25 return.
That is not the full cost. For Southampton city centre, also think about parking, traffic, return mileage, route delays, passenger splitting and whether a train or coach option would be cheaper or easier.

Extra costs of driving to Southampton
These are the costs that often make the real trip more expensive than the fuel estimate.
Council car parks such as Bedford Place MSCP charge from around £1.00 per 10 minutes up to roughly £8.00 for an all-day stay, though some car parks (Amoy Street, Commercial Road) offer a free initial period.
Busy motorway and city-centre approaches can reduce MPG and add time, especially around cruise ship departure days at the docks.
Most trips need the cost of getting home included, not just the outward journey.
Tyres, brakes, servicing and depreciation still matter on longer journeys.
Some routes may involve toll roads, paid crossings or extra detours depending on where you start.
Southampton runs a Class B Clean Air Zone, but it only targets older commercial vehicles — HGVs, buses, coaches and taxis. Private cars and motorcycles are exempt from any daily charge entirely.
Southampton trip checklist before you drive
Check these before deciding that driving is cheaper than the train or coach.
Where will you park?
New ANPR-based parking systems are rolling out at council car parks from 2026, including works at Bedford Place MSCP starting 13 April 2026 — check current signage before you rely on an older rate.
Are you travelling at peak time?
Rush-hour, cruise departure days or event traffic can make driving slower and less efficient.
How many people are travelling?
Driving often looks better when several passengers split the same fuel and parking cost.
Driving a private car?
Southampton’s Clean Air Zone doesn’t charge private cars or motorcycles at all — only certain older commercial vehicles pay, so most visitors driving here won’t be charged.
Driving to Southampton vs train or coach
The cheapest option depends on passenger numbers, parking, journey flexibility and how close your destination is to a station or the docks.
Train (Central)
~1h13 from London · from £8-12.40
Southampton Central runs around 125 trains a day to London (fastest 1h13-1h16, from £8-£12.40 depending on direction) and 126 a day to Portsmouth (fastest 35 minutes, from £14.89).
Driving + parking
Fuel + from £1/10min (council car parks)
Usually wins for the docks (cruise luggage, drop-off timing) or once you’re splitting the cost across 3+ passengers. Private cars are exempt from Southampton’s Clean Air Zone entirely, so that’s not a factor either way.

Family visit
Driving can be cheaper per person if several passengers share one car and parking is available.
Weekend visit
Driving can work well for groups, but check event traffic and parking before setting off.

A common mistake is calculating the drive to Southampton but forgetting the cost of getting home.

Flying from Southampton Airport
Southampton Airport is right by the city, with its own railway station a 5-minute walk from the terminal.
The terminal charges £7 for a 20-minute drop-off. The Long Stay car park is currently closed for redevelopment, so the genuinely free alternative right now is dropping off at Southampton Airport Parkway station instead of the forecourt — it’s a 5-minute walk and avoids the charge entirely. With Long Stay closed, multi-day parking runs through Short Stay or Priority (book well ahead; gate rates can run to £115+ for 2 days). The Parkway station itself runs about 131 trains a day (every 10-15 minutes) to Southampton Central from £4.30 — one of the shortest, cheapest airport rail links in the UK.
