RealCost Guide
Average Car Cost Per Mile UK
Car cost per mile is not just fuel. A realistic figure should include insurance, road tax, servicing, repairs, tyres, depreciation, parking and other ownership costs spread across the miles you drive.
Use this page to estimate what your car really costs per mile, spot why low-mileage cars can still be expensive, and avoid judging a car by fuel economy alone.
Fuel cost per mile is not the full cost per mile
Fuel cost per mile only tells you what petrol or diesel costs for each mile. Full car cost per mile includes the wider cost of owning and running the car.
A car can be cheap on fuel but still expensive per mile if insurance, repairs, tyres or depreciation are high.
Calculate your full car cost first
Use the Car Cost Calculator to estimate your yearly ownership cost. Then divide the yearly result by your annual mileage to work out your full cost per mile.
The calculator estimates ownership cost. To get cost per mile, divide the yearly total by your annual mileage.
Quick answer: full car cost per mile = total yearly car cost ÷ annual mileage. For example, a car costing £4,800 per year and driven 8,000 miles costs about 60p per mile.
How to calculate car cost per mile
Use the full yearly cost of the car, then spread it across the miles you actually drive.
Step 1
Estimate your total yearly car cost, including fuel, insurance, maintenance, tax, repairs, parking and depreciation.
Step 2
Work out your realistic annual mileage. Use actual mileage if you know it, not a guess from one busy month.
Step 3
Divide yearly cost by annual mileage. That gives your estimated full car cost per mile.
Example car cost per mile results
These are simple examples to show the calculation. Your own result depends on your car and mileage.
£3,000 per year / 10,000 miles
Estimated full cost per mile: 30p per mile.
£4,800 per year / 8,000 miles
Estimated full cost per mile: 60p per mile.
£6,000 per year / 6,000 miles
Estimated full cost per mile: £1.00 per mile.
Why low mileage can mean high cost per mile
Driving fewer miles does not remove fixed car costs.
Fixed costs stay
Insurance, road tax, MOT, servicing and depreciation can still apply even if you barely drive.
Costs are spread over fewer miles
If a car costs £3,000 per year but only does 3,000 miles, it costs £1 per mile before any journey-specific extras.
What should be included in full cost per mile?
The more complete the yearly cost estimate, the more useful your cost-per-mile figure becomes.
Petrol, diesel or electricity cost based on actual use.
A fixed or semi-fixed cost that can dominate low-mileage ownership.
Servicing, MOT, tyres, brakes, repairs and wear-and-tear.
Vehicle tax, permits, tolls or other regular motoring costs.
Workplace parking, permits, station parking or regular parking spend.
The value the car loses while you own it.
Fuel cost per mile vs full car cost per mile
They are both useful, but they answer different questions.
Fuel cost per mile
Useful for comparing MPG, fuel price and journey fuel cost. It does not include ownership costs.
Full car cost per mile
Useful for judging whether the car is worth owning, commuting in or replacing.
RealCost warning: do not claim a car costs “only 15p per mile” if that only includes fuel. Full ownership cost per mile is usually much higher.
When car cost per mile is useful
Cost per mile is best when you are comparing choices, not just describing a car.
How to reduce car cost per mile
The goal is not just cheaper fuel. It is lower total cost for the miles you actually drive.
How this page is different from the Fuel Cost Per Mile Calculator
This page is about full ownership cost per mile. The fuel calculator is about fuel only.
Full car cost per mile, including ownership and running costs.
Fuel-only pence per mile based on MPG and fuel price.
The best starting point for calculating the yearly total to divide by mileage.
