RealCost Guide
Cost to Drive to Gatwick Airport UK
Driving to Gatwick Airport can be convenient, especially with luggage, children or awkward flight times, but fuel is only one part of the real airport travel cost.
Use this page to estimate your fuel cost, include the return journey, check drop-off and parking costs, and decide whether driving, train, coach, taxi or public transport makes more sense.
The simple answer
The fuel cost of driving to Gatwick depends on your starting distance, fuel price and MPG. A 100-mile trip in a 45 MPG petrol car at £1.60 per litre costs about £16 in fuel each way, or about £32 return.
That is not the full airport cost. You may also need to include Gatwick’s £10 terminal drop-off charge (up to £30 for longer stays), short-stay or long-stay parking, M23/M25 traffic, return mileage, vehicle wear and whether the 30-minute Gatwick Express or a National Express coach would be cheaper.

Extra costs of driving to Gatwick Airport
These are the costs that often make airport driving more expensive than the fuel estimate.
£10 for up to 10 minutes, then £1 per extra minute up to a 30-minute stay and £30 daily cap, effective from 6 January 2026. ANPR cameras track your plate – pay by midnight the next day online, by phone or via AutoPay. Free drop-off remains available in the Long Stay car parks, and Blue Badge holders are exempt.
From £8 for up to 30 minutes, rising to around £70 for 12-24 hours – steep for anything beyond a quick pick-up.
Official Long Stay starts from £38 for the first 24 hours, then £32 for each extra day. — Purple Parking gives 12% off automatically through this link (affiliate link) – worth comparing against the official rate for your dates.
Gatwick sits between the M23 (Crawley/Brighton direction) and the M25 orbital – both regularly congested at weekend getaway peaks and around bank holiday traffic.
For drop-offs and pick-ups, the driver usually needs the journey home included.
A free shuttle train links the two terminals in a few minutes, running 24 hours a day – but check which one your airline actually uses before you set off, since the car parks and drop-off zones are terminal-specific.
Gatwick drop-off and parking checklist
Check this before assuming driving is cheaper than the train, coach or taxi.
Are you dropping off?
Add Gatwick’s £10 terminal drop-off charge (£1/minute after the first 10) if you use the North or South Terminal drop-off zones – or use the free Long Stay car park drop-off instead.
Are you picking up?
Pick-ups usually need short-stay parking rather than rushing through the drop-off zone.
Are you parking for a trip?
Compare Gatwick’s own Short Stay (from £8/30 min) and Long Stay (from £38/day) against the 30-minute Gatwick Express or a National Express coach before booking. — Purple Parking offers 12% off with no code needed (affiliate link).
Which terminal?
Gatwick has North and South terminals. Check the terminal before you leave to avoid extra driving and stress.
Driving to Gatwick vs train, coach or taxi
The cheapest option depends on passenger numbers, luggage, flight time, parking length and how easily you can reach Gatwick by public transport.
Gatwick Express (rail)
~30 minutes · from £19.80 one-way
Non-stop to London Victoria, every 15 minutes, with a 10% discount for booking online or via the app. Thameslink is a cheaper alternative from around £14.80 with a similar journey time but more stops.
Coach (National Express / easyBus)
50+ UK destinations
National Express is the only operator linking all four major London airports (Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton, Stansted) directly, plus 50+ UK towns and cities. easyBus runs a Victoria coach station transfer from under £10 one-way booked in advance.
Driving + parking
Fuel + from £38/day (Long Stay)
Usually wins once you’re splitting the cost across 3+ passengers, carrying heavy luggage, or your flight time doesn’t fit the rail/coach timetable. A lift or drop-off through the free Long Stay car park avoids the £10 terminal charge.
